internet explorer illegal operation

when i'm searching on the the net ( i have windows 98) i
get this box that pops up IEXPLORE this program has
performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. I
then click ok to close it, then another box pops up
MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER an error has occurred in
internet explorer. internet explorer will now close. when
i click on this it closes me out and back to my desktop.
i am using internet explorer 5.5, the place that we took
our computer to last said that windows 98 would not work
correctly with internet explorer 6 is this my problem?
but they said if i had windows 98 second ed. it would
